Needlepoint Rugs

The needlepoint technique was first developed to create intricate designs for clothing, but it quickly became a popular method for designing rugs in Europe during the 18th century, when hand-knot carpets became a thing of the past. Similar in construction to French Aubusson rugs, Needlepoints are made in the tent or cross stitch, with thousands of stitches sewn into a large piece of cloth. Each stitch is placed by hand, providing an intricate and detailed pattern on one side (these are not designed to be reversible). Each of the thousands of stitches sewn into the large piece of cloth are placed by hand to create a unique work of art for the home. You can find needlepoint carpets in elaborate colors and designs to enhance your space today.

Our collection of Chinese tapestry style Needlepoints were acquired by James Tufenkian in the early 1990’s, and have only recently been made available as closeouts through Outlet. In this category you will find ornate English and European design motifs, including latticed floral fields, pictorial scenes of country life, and classical arrangements of medallions, garlands, and bouquets. One will find attributes of French Empire, Rococo, Arts and Crafts, and Flowery English design influences of the Tudor, William & Mary, Queen Anne, Victorian, Regency or Georgian variety. The craft developed as part of creating designs for clothing, and it is likely that these rugs were first used as draft barriers or eye pleasing wall insulation. Needlepoints and the flat weave technique became more widespread during the eighteenth century just at the time when the craft of hand knotting carpets all but left Europe. The designs of the carpets grew more elaborate in color and design with the affluence of the owner, and eventually became a decorative delight relished by the upper classes of England and Continental Europe. In our collection of Needlepoint rugs you will find ornate English and European design motifs, such as latticed floral fields and pictorial country scenes. Luxurious styles influenced by England's royalty bring a regal look to sophisticated spaces, including the living room, dining room or home office.

Needlepoint sizes are typically large to oversize; our collection includes sizes that range nominally from 6"x9" to 13"x18". We suggest using thick underlayment such as a cushion fiber pad to protect the carpet and prevent buckling. Reverse the cushion fiber pad (latex up) if you use a needlepoint over broadloom or wall-to-wall carpeting. Although significantly lighter in weight than a pile carpet, these Needlepoints are suitable for a great room, living room, dining room, home office, or den.
